Safety Advice on Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated in their pure form and can be toxic if used incorrectly. They can also be highly flammable, therefore on their own they need to be stored correctly and the relevant safety guidelines followed accordingly.

  • Keep out of the reach of children.

  • Do not use if you have any known allergies to any oils or their constituents.

  • Do not apply essential oils undiluted to the skin, they can cause allergies and reactions, follow instructions on use accordingly. There may be some exceptions to the use of undiluted essential oils, such as Tea Tree or Lavender, however this should be under the guidance of a qualified aromatherapist.

  • Do not ingest any essential oils – there are different grades of essential oils and the ones that can be ingested are generally food grade. The ones we endorse are 100% pure.

  • If you have any medical conditions, underlying health conditions, are taking any medication or undergoing any type of medical treatment you should check with your physician and a qualified aromatherapist to ensure that it is safe to use oils in conjunction with your prescribed treatment.

  • Essential oils are flammable liquids, they should be stored according to the manufacturer’s guidance.

  • Certain essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy. Please seek professional advice prior to using aromatherapy whilst pregnant.

  • Always consult a qualified aromatherapist before using essential oils with babies and children.

  • Certain essential oils (i.e. spices) can cause skin irritation for people with sensitive skin. If you have sensitive skin, we recommend performing a small patch test prior to using any new oil or product.

  • Some essential oils such as Bergamot and other citrus oils are phototoxic which means they can cause skin sensitisation and skin discolouration in bright sunlight. These oils should not be applied to the skin before direct exposure to direct sunlight.
